Over 500,000 people suffer from shingles in the U.S. each year.

The blistering, painful red rashing, and burning sensation of shingles plagues the age group of 60 more than any other group. Fifty percent of people who live to age 85 will have had the virus. The best prevention available is the shingles vaccination, which only protects about 50 percent of the people who get it.

The reality is, the chances of YOU getting shingles in your life time is likely.

The good news is MLS Laser Therapy, the pain relieving technology offered here at our office, treats the pain and skin reactions associated with shingles. In fact, most patients feel relief from the debilitating pain after the first treatment.

So what exactly is shingles, and what are the signs?

Shingles is a painful skin rash that usually appears in a band, a strip, or a small area on one side of the face or body.  It is caused by the varicella zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person has had chickenpox, VZV stays in the body.  Shingles is most common in older adults and people who have weak immune systems because of stress, injury, certain medicines, or other reasons.

The rash is the most common sign of shingles, however a persistent headache, fever, or ache in a specific area of your body might indicate the virus. Some people may first experience a burning, tingling, or itching in a specific area on one side of the body before the rash appears as well.

The severity of the rash, and the pain that comes with it, may be different for each individual. However, shingles may bring intense pain, even in moderate cases of the rash.

Most cases of shingles can last a few weeks. But if the pain lasts long after the rash and blisters have disappeared, a person might be suffering from postherpetic neuralgia. Postherpetic neuralgia affects your nerve fibers and skin and can be extremely painful. The risk of having postherpetic neuralgia increases with age along with the area that is affected, such as the face.

At our office, we are taking innovating steps to combat shingles and stop the suffering that thousands endure. We are now accepting patients who are suffering from or have had shingles and still suffer from the postherpetic neuralgia pain.

If you or someone you know suffer from shingles, please tell them to pick up the phone and call our office to schedule an appointment. You don’t have to live with the pain, don’t let shingles control your life.
